A summary of significant Los Angeles City Hall decisions affecting the Westside in the last week.

CITY COUNCIL

WALK-A-THON: Approved the temporary closure of Marlton Drive from Coliseum Street to Martin Luther King Boulevard in the Crenshaw area from 7 a.m to noon on May 16 for the United Negro College Fund’s “Walk a Mile to Save A Mind” Walk-a-thon.

ENVIRONMENT: Approved a resolution by Councilwoman Ruth Galanter endorsing the goals of the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development, which will take place in June in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The conference of world leaders will consider solutions to the planet’s environmental and economic problems.

BOARD OF PUBLIC WORKS

WALK OF FAME: Approved requests to place the names of singer Donna Summer and actor Jester Hairston along the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Installation for Hairston is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. Feb. 12 at 6161 Hollywood Blvd. Hairston, 91, appears in the NBC comedy “Amen.” The ceremony for Summer is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. March 18 at 7000 Hollywood Blvd.

BOARD OF PUBLIC WORKS

How Westside representatives voted on selected issues. SETTLEMENT: Approved spending $42,500 to settle a lawsuit against the city by a woman who was injured in a May, 1988, traffic accident when her vehicle was struck by a city street sweeper. Yvette Roberts’ automobile was forced into a power pole then hit a parked car after the operator of the sweeper pulled from the curb and hit Robert’s eastbound vehicle. She injured her neck, back and shoulders and a cut on her elbow required 40 stitches to close. Passed: 10-0. Voting yes: Marvin Braude, John Ferraro, Nate Holden and Michael Woo. Ruth Galanter, Joel Wachs and Zev Yaroslavsky were absent.

DARE: Approved funding for the Drug Abuse Resistance Education Regional Training Center Program, which trains law enforcement officers in drug abuse prevention. The program will receive $210,000 in federal funds for this year. Passed: 12-0. Voting yes: Braude, Galanter, Holden, Woo and Yaroslavsky. Ferraro and Wachs were absent.
