* Owens-Corning Fiberglas Corp., the building products company, reported a loss of nearly $530 million in the last quarter of 1991 and set aside $800 million to pay for future asbestos-related claims.

The Toledo, Ohio-based company said it lost $529 million in the final quarter of 1991, or $12.45 a share, compared to a loss of $33 million, or 78 cents a share, a year earlier. It reported sales of $687.0 million, against $758.0 million in the fourth quarter of 1990.

Owens-Corning lost $742 million, or $17.52 a share, for the year. That contrasted with a profit of $73 million, or $1.73 a share, in 1990. Sales totaled $2.78 billion, down from $3.06 billion in 1990.

The company said 1991 results included the special $800-million charge for asbestos claims it may face between now and the year 2000.

The company, which stopped making asbestos-containing products in 1972, has faced thousands of suits from people contending that they suffered health damage from exposure to the product. It is expected to pay hundreds of millions of dollars to settle the claims.

The company also took a charge of $227 million to adopt a new accounting standard dealing with post-retirement benefits.
