Europeans Begin Run for the Money
It’s still seven years away, but the race to create Europe’s currency of the future, the ecu, began Thursday with the announcement of a contest for the best design.
“It will be our daily money, a symbol of the oneness of European people,” said Jean-Pierre Cot, a French member of the European Parliament and leader of the assembly’s Socialist group. The Socialists, the largest political bloc in the 518-member assembly, are sponsoring the contest.
Officials say the new money will probably bear the European Community symbol of 12 gold stars in a circle, and countries may be allowed to retain at least one national symbol.
