William Hallett, 49; Headed Indian Affairs Bureau

William Hallett, 49, head of the U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs in President Jimmy Carter’s Administration. Hallett was economic development director for the Red Lake Band of Chippewa in Minnesota and directed the Bureau of Indian Affairs from 1979 to 1981. After leaving office, he became a consultant specializing in Indian economic development. Hallett went to work for the Red Lake Band in 1990, coordinating and supervising economic development and working with tribal Chairman Gerald Brun to expand gaming in Minnesota. Hallett was director of economic development for the National Congress of American Indians in Washington from 1968 to 1970 and worked for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development from 1970 to 1979. On Monday from injuries suffered when his car overturned in dense fog near Bemidji, Minn.
