Top-seeded Monica Seles and No. 2 Mary Joe Fernandez won second-round matches in Essen, Germany. Seles defeated unseeded Angela Kerek of Germany, 6-2, 6-2, and Fernandez defeated Claudia Porwik of Germany, 6-3, 6-3.
Seles said she would refuse Jimmy Connors’ challenge to put up $1 million to play him in a winner-take-all match.
