Boy Scouts Honor 29 Volunteers

The Silver Beaver Award, highest honor given to adult Boy Scout volunteers, was presented to 29 Orange County residents at a recent awards dinner sponsored by the Orange County Chapter of Boy Scouts of America.

Honorees were William Archer, Dallas Binger and Edward Michalek, La Palma; Ken Bazar, Herbert Ungricht and David Prizio, Fountain Valley; David Claypool, Terry Fillmore and John Peterson III, Anaheim; Lyndon Johansen, Costa Mesa; John Knoll and Janet Knoll, Fullerton.

Others were Leo Larsen, Roderick Woods and Larry Simkin, Huntington Beach; Carrey Nelson, Brea; Edward Orr and Robert Schwab, Placentia; Sue Ploessel, El Toro; Glenn Potter, Ellen Smith and Richard Viral, Mission Viejo.

Also honored were Rebecca Roach, San Juan Capistrano; Edgar Sands, Laguna Beach; David Shawver, Stanton; Janet Sun, Cypress; Doug Whyte, La Habra; Richard Worcester, Irvine; and William Conlin, a Boy Scout Council member.

The Orange County Council, with 89,000 participating Scouts, is the seventh largest in the country.

Orange County Superior Court Judge Robert A. Knox was named judge of the year; Weinberg and Weinberg was named law firm of the year and Mitchell Samuelson and Michael Turner were named attorneys of the year by the Constitutional Rights Foundation of Orange County.

Laguna Hills resident William S. Caldwell, director of El Toro Centre on Geopolitical Studies, was honored by Libertas, a San Pedro Yugoslav group, for his work on gathering more than 50 bundles of clothing for the people of war-damaged Dubrovnik, Yugoslavia.

Twelve literacy tutors who graduated from the Newport Mesa Library branch of Literacy Volunteers of America are Jean Badalato, Rita Charlesworth, Kathy Mader, Roberta Rhea and Claire Strauch, Newport Beach; Mimi Birch, Carol Lorenz and Bernie Neil, Costa Mesa; Kurt Topik and Trudy Topik, Laguna Beach, and Ann Root and Ray Simmons, Corona del Mar. Marcia Hendrix of Newport Beach trained the tutors who will be part of the new Family English Literacy Program developed by the school district.

Richard A. Chard, Huntington Beach resident and Orange Coast College’s administrative dean of vocational education, has been named to the board of directors of the California Community College Administrators of Occupational Education.

Chard, who taught industrial arts in the Long Beach Unified School District for 24 years, was a part-time drafting instructor at OCC for 22 years.

He holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in industrial arts from Cal State Long Beach.

Winners of the “Famous Women of the Revolution” essay contest sponsored by the Katuktu Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution are students Sommer Coston, fifth grade; Hester Riley, seventh grade and Tracy Andres, eight grade. All are from the Tustin Unified School District.

Rosie Connor, a Fullerton resident and student volunteer coordinator at St. Jude Medical Center in Fullerton, was honored by the Southern California Assn. of Directors of Volunteer Services.

Working with the hospital teen-age volunteers, Connor has helped the Junior Guild increase membership from 53 to 125 in the past six months.

Don Hoppe, a Placentia resident and senior civil engineer for Fullerton, has been promoted to acting assistant city engineer.
