Stanford Women Lead Pac-10 Swimming

Summer Sanders and Jenny Thompson set meets records Friday in helping Stanford take the lead after the first of three days of the Pacific 10 Conference women’s swimming championships at the Belmont Plaza pool in Long Beach.

Sanders won the 200-yard individual medley in a meet-record time of 1 minute 59.34 seconds. Thompson won the 50-yard freestyle in 22.64, also a meet record.

They also teamed with Mary Edwards and Janel Jorgenson to win the 200 freestyle relay in 1:32.57, another meet record.

Stanford leads second-place Calfornia, 480 points to 368. USC is third with 319 points, three better than fourth-place USC.

UCLA’s Natalie Norberg won the 500-yard freestyle in 4:46.02.
