Federal investigators will examine the charred voice recorder from a military cargo plane that crashed into a motel and restaurant, but military officials did not know Saturday whether it is usable.

The Lockheed C-130, part of the Kentucky Guard’s 123rd Tactical Airlift Wing, crashed Thursday while practicing takeoffs and landings at Evansville Regional Airport. Five crewmen aboard the plane and 11 people on the ground were killed.

Investigators have reported few clues as to the cause of the crash of the lumbering, four-engine turboprop. They spent a third day Saturday picking through the plane wreckage and buildings.

The voice recorder was found Friday, but was so damaged that it took investigators some time to confirm what it was. It was being sent to the National Transportation Safety Board in Washington for analysis.

Mental health professionals on Saturday began offering counseling to residents suffering emotional trauma. A community-wide session with counselors was scheduled for Saturday night.

Separate funerals for the Evansville victims were planned today through Tuesday, and a memorial service for the five airmen was scheduled for today in Louisville.
