San Diego State Earns Split Against Sonoma

San Diego State’s baseball team managed to split a doubleheader with visiting Sonoma State despite a rain-shortened second game Sunday. The Aztecs (3-2) dropped the 5 p.m. opener, 6-4, but came back to win the six-inning second game, 4-3, at Smith Field.

Brad Gennaro, a junior outfielder out of St. Augustine, was two for three and Matt Franco singled in two runs to highlight SDSU’s three-run third inning in the nightcap.

Three Aztecs pitchers recorded 10 strikeouts in six innings; Benji Grigsby struck out all four batters he faced en route to a save. Rich Juarez, who relieved in the fourth, got the victory.

Sonoma State (2-2) jumped on SDSU early in the opener with Tom Solari’s two-out, 400-foot home run in the top of the first. Sonoma scored four runs in the sixth. The Aztecs scored twice in the seventh and twice in the ninth as right-hander Clint Borman suffered the loss.

SDSU is scheduled to play a single game at the University of San Diego at 2 p.m. Tuesday.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

SDSU slumped to 1-8, 0-6 in the Western Intercollegiate Volleyball Assn. with a loss to Hawaii at Peterson Gym, 4-15, 15-13, 15-6, 15-9. John Hyden had 21 kills and Todd Yarbarough 18 for the Aztecs, who will play the Rainbows again at home at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. Hawaii is 3-3, 3-2.

WRESTLING

SDSU split two dual matches at Peterson Gym, defeating Cal State Fullerton, 22-15, and losing to Drake, 28-5. Quincy Clark, a 177-pound sophomore from San Diego, was the only double winner for the Aztecs. He topped Dwayne Buth of Fullerton, 9-4, and Robbie Steger of Drake, 10-3, while improving his record to 15-5-2.

Phil Meyer (5-7-1), a 190-pound senior, beat the Titans’ John Sanchez, 6-2, and wrestled Bulldog Tony Burger to a 2-2 tie. Senior heavyweight Phil Jones split his two matches to improve to 15-9. The Aztecs are 4-10-1 in dual matches, 3-1 at home.
