Bill Clinton put out two new ads Tuesday that combat attacks on his character. One urges New Hampshire voters to send the tabloids a message, while another features his state veterans affairs director complaining that the Arkansas governor has been “ambushed.”

“Look what’s really at stake in this election--your home, your health, your job, your future,” Clinton said in a new 30-second TV ad, talking into the camera.

“Send a message to Washington, to Wall Street and to the tabloids,” Clinton said, urging voters not to go “back to the negative politics that brought us the bankrupt policies of the ‘80s.”

A few weeks ago, Clinton faced unsubstantiated allegations from a woman who told a tabloid in a paid interview that they had had a 12-year affair. Then a new flap erupted last week over Clinton’s use of a deferment during the Vietnam War.

His radio ad is a 60-second spot that features Herschel Gober, the Arkansas veterans affairs director, who tells listeners he served two tours of duty in Vietnam.

“I was wounded in an ambush . . . and now Bill Clinton is being ambushed,” Gober says.
