A quarrel between a couple outside a North Park restaurant turned deadly Tuesday night when a gunman walked up to the pair and shot the man as he struck the woman, police said.

Shortly after 9 p.m., San Diego police arrested Christopher Anthony Klepper, 43, of San Diego outside Rudford’s restaurant, where he was holding a .38-caliber revolver, Lt. Paul Ybarrondo said. Police arrived at the restaurant in the 2900 block of El Cajon Boulevard after officers patrolling the area heard gunshots.

Witnesses told police that they had seen a couple, who were not identified, fighting in a parking lot between the restaurant and a furniture store, Ybarrondo said. A gunman approached the couple and fired several shots at the man as he struck the woman.

The wounded man staggered into the restaurant and collapsed on the floor, Ybarrondo said. He was taken to Mercy Hospital, where he was pronounced dead of gunshot wounds to the head and right shoulder.

Klepper and the victim were apparently strangers, Ybarrondo said. Klepper was being held without bail on suspicion of murder.
