Santa Monica : Water-Saving Plan Works

Share

Santa Monica’s program to replace water-guzzling toilets and shower heads has been so successful that the city’s water use in 1991 was its lowest in 20 years.

Craig Perkins, environmental services manager for the city, said the Baysaver program goal of retrofitting 25% of Santa Monica’s bathrooms was reached three years earlier than planned.

The low-flow toilets and shower heads represent savings of $590,000 a year on water bought from the Metropolitan Water District and reduced sewage treatment fees, Perkins said in a staff report to the City Council.

The council voted unanimously on Tuesday to launch Phase II of the program, aimed at another 25% of the city’s plumbing. The city will offer a $75 rebate for each toilet replaced with an ultra-low-flow model, which saves 60 gallons of water a day. Low-flow shower heads are available free from the city.
