Proposed Code for Filmmakers
How about a tax on movies that contain violence, profanity and sex acts? Taxes were recently raised on the consumption of alcohol and tobacco, two deleterious substances with long-term costs borne by society. So why not a tax on depictions of excessive violence, profanity and sex in the movies, which, despite what some social scientists claim, are at least partly responsible for many of our social ills?
The revenues derived could be channeled into alleviating some of the problems Hollywood has helped to create, such as teen-age pregnancy, drug abuse and violent crime.
As things now stand, Hollywood is to our moral and social character as the Exxon Valdez was to the Gulf of Alaska.
