SIMI VALLEY : Groundbreaking for Rail Station Moved

Share

A ceremony celebrating the groundbreaking for the Simi Valley commuter train station is scheduled this morning at City Hall, officials said.

The public is invited to attend the 10 a.m. ceremony in the City Council chambers located at 2929 Tapo Canyon Road, said Assistant City Manager Mike Sedell. Among those attending will be Mayor Greg Stratton, Councilman Bill Davis and Ventura County Supervisor Vicky Howard.

Officials had originally planned to hold the groundbreaking event at the actual site of the future train station but moved the event because of the heavy rains this week, Sedell said. The station and an adjoining 600-car parking lot will be built on a 6.7-acre parcel at the southwest corner of Stearns Street and Los Angeles Avenue.

A similar station is also planned in Moorpark, with construction slated to begin in late March or early April. The new train stations are being built largely with funds from Proposition 116, a statewide bond measure approved by voters in June, 1990.

Commuter train service linking Moorpark and Simi Valley to downtown Los Angeles is scheduled to begin in October. The service will include four eastbound trains in the morning and four westbound trains in the evening. Special discount tickets will be available for regular passengers.

The 47-mile line will include stops in Chatsworth, Van Nuys, Burbank and Glendale.
