COLLEGE SLOWDOWN: UC Irvine officials warn that student admissions could be tougher than ever. With a bleak budget outlook and letters to new students due out now, they’ve set a 1% to 2% limit on enrollment growth for the fall. . . . The governor’s proposed 1 1/2% funding increase for the UC system, if passed, “would keep us alive,” says UCI Chancellor Jack W. Peltason. “I don’t like to contemplate what would happen” without it.
