Hangin’ In

Regarding the article “New Kids on the Spot” (Feb. 5): I find it incredibly ironic that Gregory McPherson only now has the gall to make lip-sync allegations against New Kids on the Block. It seems to me that there must be something more here than looking out for the best interests of the fans.

The fact is that New Kids on the Block do sing their own lead vocals. Anyone who has attended their concerts, as I have, knows that their shows are live--not Memorex--because each show is never exactly the same as the last, and there are times when they don’t hit the right notes. They’re only human.

“Hangin’ Tough,” the album McPherson alleges was dubbed with Maurice Starr’s vocals, was released in 1988. I’m sure had the Kids not reached the level of stardom they have, he would not have bothered to make this uproar. If he had any sense at all, he would have gone public with this allegation a year or two ago when it could have affected the New Kids phenomenon. Four years is a little long to be keeping this “secret.” It’s too late now. People who are still fans are die-hard zealots, and there is almost nothing any outside source or former associate could do to tarnish the Kids’ reputation in the eyes of those fans. So forget it, Mr. McPherson. Your little plan to ruin the Kids has not caused even an inkling of a doubt to surface in the minds of anyone who is of consequence.
