COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Irvine Right-Hander Stops Northridge

Senior right-hander David Bladow continued his impressive start, pitching UC Irvine to a 4-1 victory over host Cal State Northridge in a nonconference baseball game Friday.

Bladow improved to 3-0, allowing four hits and striking out five in nine innings.

Irvine scored single runs in the first, fifth, sixth and eighth. Matt Filson had a home run, Ray Walker and Chris Facione had run-scoring singles, and Corey Parker had an RBI double for Irvine.

Northridge’s Ken Kendrena, a senior right-hander from Cypress College, fell to 0-3. As a junior last season, he was 13-2 and a third-team All-American.

In other nonconference baseball games:

Cal State Fullerton 13, Loyola Marymount 2--Jim Betzsold hit a three-run home run, Phil Nevin hit a two-run home run and Tony Banks added a bases-empty homer for visiting Fullerton (3-2). Dan Naulty (2-0) allowed seven hits and two runs, one earned, with seven strikeouts in six innings for the victory.

Cal State Los Angeles 2, Chapman 1--Steve Soliz’s sacrifice fly in the sixth gave Cal State Los Angeles (4-5) a 2-0 lead at Hart Park in Orange. Buster Nietzke had two hits for Chapman.

In the Big West Conference Swimming and Diving Championships:

UC Irvine Third, Seventh--Erik Walton won the 100-yard backstroke in a meet record 49.64 seconds as the Anteater men remained third after the second day of the three-day meet at Belmont Plaza.

Walton also swam the first leg of Irvine’s 200-yard medley relay team which won in a meet record 1:32.16.

The Anteaters have 417 points, trailing Nevada Las Vegas (435.5) and UC Santa Barbara (514).

On the women’s side, Irvine moved up a notch to seventh in the standings as Danielle Pajer finished second in the 100-yard breaststroke.

In the Western Intercollegiate Volleyball Assn.:

UCLA 3, UC Irvine 0--Dan Landry had 11 kills as the fourth-ranked Bruins (5-3, 3-2) won their eighth match over the Anteaters in as many tries. Leland Quinn had 16 kills for UC Irvine (3-5, 1-5).

In nonconference women’s gymnastics:

UCLA 190.6, Cal State Fullerton 189.5--Although Celeste Delia set a school record in the all-around for the second consecutive meet, the Titans fell to 3-3 in front of 596 at Titan Gym.

In the Arizona softball tournament:

Cal State Fullerton Loses Two of Three--Tiffany Boyd pitched a four-hitter as the Titans defeated Ohio State, 4-0, in their season opener, before losing, 3-1, to California and 6-2 to Arizona.
