A Tedious, Backward Journey : ** 1/2, PAUL McCARTNEY,”Get Back”, Vestron Video ($19.98)

Director Richard Lester, who delivered some of the most endearing rock ‘n’ roll footage ever with the Beatles’ “A Hard Day’s Night” almost 30 years ago, does indeed get back with Paul McCartney to try to overcome the numbing predictability of concert movies. His solution in this chronicle of McCartney’s triumphant 1989-90 world tour is neither endearing nor surprising. The scenes of adoring crowds capture some of the nightly emotion of the shows, but the repeated use of documentary news and Beatles-related flashbacks to place McCartney’s music into sociopolitical perspective is often tediously sentimental.
Items in this survey of pop-related books, videocassettes and laser discs are rated on a scale of one star (poor) to four (excellent).
