Security forces Sunday night shot and killed four gunmen suspected of being IRA guerrillas after they attacked a police station.

The killings bring the death toll in sectarian violence in the Northern Ireland conflict this year to 30, the worst bloodshed since 1976.

Police said security forces in a field opened fire on the gunmen as they were escaping in a truck after attacking a police station in Coalisland, County Tyrone.

Officials believe the four men were from the Irish Republican Army, which is fighting to end British rule in the province.

No police were hurt.
