Lee Janzen wasn’t thinking about the money or what a victory would mean when he noticed at the 16th green that he was tied for the lead at the Tucson National Golf Club Sunday.

“I knew what I had to do,” Janzen said.

And he did it, confidently rapping in a 12-foot putt for the go-ahead birdie, then nursing the lead home for the first victory of his three-season career.

His seven-under-par 65 gave him a 72-hole total of 18-under 270 and a one-stroke victory over Bill Britton in the Northern Telecom Open.

Janzen, 27, who spent a couple of years on the mini-tours before gaining his playing rights on the PGA Tour in 1990, won $198,000 from the total purse of $1.1 million.

Britton had completed his round of 66 and was watching from beside the green when Janzen came to the 18th needing a par to win.

Janzen’s three-iron approach was on the putting surface, about 60 feet from the cup.

His lag putt was five feet short, but he curled in the next one for the winner.

Jim Colbert sank a three-foot birdie putt on the fourth playoff hole to defeat George Archer and win the $450,000 senior tournament at Tampa, Fla.

Colbert, who started the day two strokes behind Archer and three behind Kermit Zarley, shot a seven-under-par 64. Colbert and Archer each shot 13-under-par 200 for 54 holes, breaking the tournament record by seven shots.

Greg Norman had his best chance to win a tournament since June of 1990, but he shot a four-over-par 76 and finished three strokes behind winner Craig Parry in the Australian Masters at Sydney.

Parry shot a final-round 68 to finish at nine-under-par 283. It was his ninth career victory, but his first since 1987.

Norman, a six-time winner in the event, bogeyed the 15th, 16th and 17th holes after Parry had tied him for the lead.
