Talk of a possible late entrant into the Democratic presidential race dominated an AFL-CIO executive council meeting Monday, the day before the New Hampshire primary.

House Speaker Thomas S. Foley (D-Wash.) and Senate Majority Leader George J. Mitchell (D-Me.) told the meeting the race would be improved by added competition.

Foley said the nominee probably would come from the present five-man field, but added: “It’s also possible some others might come into the race. . . . A lot depends on what happens in New Hampshire.”

“Democracy is best served by competition,” Mitchell said. “The more candidates, the better.”

New York Gov. Mario M. Cuomo, Texas Sen. Lloyd Bentsen and House Majority Leader Richard A. Gephardt of Missouri have been mentioned as possible alternatives.
