SAILING

Unless the wind dies, it seemed that Roy Disney’s Pyewacket will break the record for ninth biennial San Diego-to-Manzanillo race by more than a day today.

The Santa Cruz 70 from Los Angeles Yacht Club had 301 nautical miles to go in the 1,100-mile race at 8 a.m. Tuesday and was projected to finish at 10:14 PST this morning, based on its average speed of 8.8 knots.

Jake Woods’ larger, 82-foot maxi Sorcery averaged 7.6 knots when it set the record of 5 days, 23 hours, 59 minutes, 43 seconds in 1986. Pyewacket, which started Friday, has until almost noon Thursday to beat that record.

However, Pyewacket, leading nine other ULDB 70s as well as the rest of the 19-boat fleet, faced historically light winds across the Sea of Cortez to the Mexican mainland.

Victoria, sailed by Steve Steiner of the Long Beach YC, leaped from sixth to second place Tuesday but was 55 miles behind Pyewacket.
