Toreros Take Error-Filled Victory Over PLNC

University of San Diego took advantage of five errors and scored an easy 12-2 nonconference baseball victory Thursday over visiting Point Loma Nazarene College.

Rich Miller hit a two-run home run in the first inning to provide PLNC (3-4-1) with its only offense, but USD (2-4) responded with all its runs over the next four innings.

Tony Moeder had three hits and two RBIs to lead USD’s 11-hit attack. Kevin Herde added two hits, two runs and four RBIs.

Jeff Crane (2-0) pitched seven innings for the victory.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Rusty Fallin scored 27 points, 20 in the second half, to lift Point Loma Nazarene to an 88-84 Golden State Athletic Conference upset of first-place Southern California College (20-7, 7-3). PLNC (12-15, 4-7) blew a 14-point lead in the first half and trailed by eight early in the second before mounting a comeback. Charlie Simmons added 15 points and 11 rebounds, and Mark Bulgin had 17 points for PLNC. El Camino graduate Edmund Johnson had 17 for SCC; teammate Mike West, from Fallbrook, had 13.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Kieishsha Garnes, despite being triple-teamed, scored 23 points to lead San Diego State to an 82-74 Western Athletic Conference victory over Colorardo State. The Aztecs (15-7, 7-2) led, 66-65, with five minutes to go, when Falisha Wright (19 points) buried two three-point baskets. Michelle Miles scored 13 for the Aztecs, while Michelle Suman had 11 and Christine Murguia 10. Colorado State dropped to 7-15, 2-8.

University of San Diego scored a 70-56 victory over Gonzaga in a West Coast Conference game. Lynda Jones, from Mt. Carmel High, scored 17 points and grabbed nine rebounds, and Angie Straub scored 16 to lead USD (9-13, 4-6). Debbie Gollnick added 12 points. USD shot 50% (15 of 30) in the second half to overcome a 28-25 halftime deficit. Gonzaga shot 21% (10 of 47) in the second half. Gonzaga is 7-17, 4-7.

SOFTBALL

UCLA, ranked No.1 nationally, shut out No. 17 Minnesota, 1-0, at the San Diego State Spring Classic at Kit Carson Park. UCLA also shut out St. Mary’s, 8-0, in round robin play. San Diego State lost both its games, 2-1 to South Florida and 9-0 to Cal State Northridge. Neither team got a hit in the SDSU-South Florida game. Long Beach State, ranked 12th, beat Minnesota, 8-5, and St. Mary’s, 8-0.

Point Loma Nazarene used the international tie-breaker to beat Pacific Christian, 7-6, and swept the nonconference doubleheader with a 6-4 victory in the second game. Robin Rabello picked up a victory and save.

MEN’S TENNIS

San Diego State (4-0, 3-0) swept singles play and scored a 6-1 Western Athletic Conference victory over Air Force (8-3, 1-1).

Kerry Safdi defeated Dan Oosterhous, 6-3, 6-2, and Michael Sass defeated Bruce Ybarra, 6-2, 6-3, in the Nos. 1 and 2 singles matches.

Point Loma Nazarene had no problem with Azusa Pacific, scoring a 9-0 Golden State Athletic Conference victory. Enrique Guarjardo defeated Miikka Ceronen, 6-0, 6-3, and Matties Rendefors beat Greg Johnson, 7-6 (7-5), 2-6, 6-3, in the two premier singles matches. PLNC is 2-0.
