COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Arizona Rallies Last to Beat Titans, 19-15

Shortstop Phil Nevin botched a potential inning-ending double play, allowing host Arizona to score six times in the eighth inning, and the Wildcats went on to a 19-15 nonconference baseball victory Thursday over Cal State Fullerton.

The Titans had overcome a 12-5 deficit to lead 13-12 and later led, 15-13.

Nevin’s error allowed two runs to score and Arizona to tie the score at 15. Jason Bates singled in two more runs and Robbie Moen added a two-run double.

Fullerton (5-3) opened the seventh inning with six consecutive singles for four runs and got four more on Steve Sisco’s double, D.C. Olsen’s sacrifice fly and Brent Hemphill’s two-run single.

Arizona tied the score in the bottom of the inning on Phil Echeverria’s home run, but the Titans regained the lead with two runs in the top of the eighth.

Olsen, a freshman who graduated from Fullerton High, went three for three with three runs batted in.

In other nonconference baseball:

Cal Poly Pomona 5, UC Irvine 4--The Anteaters twice had the tying run on base in the ninth inning but could not advance the runner past first either time.

After Chris Facione’s sacrifice fly, Chris Hutchins was thrown out trying to steal second. Steve Ott walked, but Pete Golaszewski grounded out to end the game.

Pomona (3-4) went ahead in the bottom of the eighth on Matt Bullock’s two-run homer.

Jon Damush hit an eighth-inning solo homer for Irvine (5-3), which also got RBIs from Corey Parker and Tim McDonald.

The Master’s 9, Southern California College 5--Greg Ertel hit a grand slam in the ninth for SCC (1-3). Syl Harris went two for four with three RBIs for The Master’s (4-5).

In Golden State Athletic Conference baseball:

Westmont 6, Christ College Irvine 4--Christ College Irvine (4-3, 0-1) dropped its conference opener despite a two-run homer by Daryl Lowe in the eighth. Rob Meinhard went two for three with two RBIs for the Eagles.

In Big West Conference women’s basketball:

Fresno State 79, UC Irvine 67--The Anteaters lost their 14th consecutive game, despite a career-high 19 points by senior Geanine Hobbs.

Irvine (4-19, 0-14) trailed, 28-23, with 4 minutes 58 seconds left in the first half, but were outscored 15-6 for the remainder of the half.

The Anteaters gave up the first four points of the second half and trailed by 18 on five occasions.

Yvonne Catala added 14 for Irvine. Adella Head had 20 for Fresno State (11-11, 5-8).

In Golden State Athletic Conference men’s basketball:

Point Loma Nazarene 88, Southern California College 84--The Vanguards squandered an eight-point second-half lead and fell into a tie for the conference lead with idle Westmont. Rusty Fallin scored six of his 27 points during an 8-0 run as the host Crusaders improved to 12-15, 4-7.

Mike Henjum had 19 points for SCC (20-7, 7-3), and Edmond Johnson added 17.
