World IN BRIEF : ISRAEL : Plans for Secret Evacuations Told

Israel is planning a secret operation this year to airlift hundreds of Jews out of Yemen, Britain’s Sunday Times newspaper said. The newspaper, quoting unidentified Jewish sources, said the plan, code-named Operation Magic Carpet, would be similar to that which evacuated thousands of Jews from Ethiopia in 1984 and was likely to take place before Israel’s general election in June. The report said it was not known whether Israel had the cooperation of Arab authorities in Yemen, which has a Jewish community of about 1,500.
