NATO Official Opens East-West Study Center
NATO’s secretary general on Saturday inaugurated a center for debate on East-West issues, housed in the mansion of former Communist dictator Nicolae Ceausescu.
Manfred Woerner told a news conference that the establishment of the Euro-Atlantic center highlights “Romania’s important role in the new Europe.”
Romania, like other Eastern European countries, has sought closer links with the North Atlantic Treaty Organization since last year’s disintegration of the Soviet-led Warsaw Pact left it with no formal military ties.
