3D Systems, Quadrax Corp. Settle Patent Litigation

Share

3D Systems Inc. said it has settled patent litigation between the Valencia-based company and a Quadrax Corp. subsidiary.

3D produces machines that use a laser and chemicals to rapidly make prototype models of industrial parts and other products. The company had claimed in 1990 that Quadrax Laser Technologies Inc., a unit of Portsmouth, R. I.-based Quadrax Corp., had infringed certain existing and pending patents held by 3D.

Under their settlement, Quadrax Laser Technologies transferred its laser-modeling patent and related technology to 3D in exchange for 130,000 shares of 3D common stock. (At recent prices, the stock has a market value of about $300,000.)

Quadrax also agreed to stop marketing its laser-modeling equipment and will contract with 3D to develop certain technology aimed at enhancing the performance of 3D’s products. In exchange, 3D will pay Quadrax a royalty--which was not disclosed--on sales of any 3D equipment using the Quadrax-aided technology.
