LOS ANGELES MARATHON DAILY REPORT : For Those Not Up to 26.2 Miles, There Will Be a 5-Kilometer Run
Not everyone is capable of running a marathon. For those who simply want to be a part of the festivities for Sunday’s seventh annual L.A. Marathon, there’s a chance.
The Rogaine 5K is run in conjunction with the marathon and, at 3.1 miles, it is more accessible to most runners. Even though there are world-class athletes in the field, race organizers expect some 3,000 entrants among recreational runners.
Among the elite are Aaron Ramirez, who has twice finished second; Frank O’Mara of Ireland, who won the race in Chicago; Steve Scott, U.S. record-holder at 1,500 meters and the mile; Jim Spivey, the best American at 1,500 meters last year, and Doug Padilla, the national champion at 10,000 meters.
Among the women are Sonia O’Sullivan of Ireland, the former world record holder at 5,000 meters; Annette Peters, the former NCAA 5,000 champion; Sabrina Dornhoefer, also a former NCAA 5,000 champion and Pan American Games gold medalist at 3,000, and two women from the Commonwealth of Independent States--Olga Markova and Inna Pushkariova.
The race begins at the intersection of Jefferson and Figueroa streets and finishes in the Coliseum. Start time is 9:30 a.m., about a half hour after the start of the marathon.
