OXNARD : Trucking Company Fined in Violations

Share

An Oxnard trucking company was fined $15,000 and put on three years probation for illegally disposing of hazardous waste, authorities said Friday.

Gibbs International Inc. pleaded no contest to the misdemeanor charges. Corporate officials were also ordered to perform 20 hours of community service, said Deputy District Atty. Linda Groberg.

Ventura County Environmental Health officials received an anonymous tip last May that sludge waste at Gibbs International was being put in a trash container behind the business at the Ventura Freeway and Rice Road, Groberg said. The waste came from the washing of trucks at the site, Groberg said.

Because of the high levels of lead in the waste, it should have been taken by a registered transporter to a site for hazardous waste disposal, Groberg said.

“There were 55 gallons of sludge waste from washing the cars (that were in) plastic bags and boxes in the dumpster,” Groberg said.

Groberg added: “It was interesting that it was an anonymous tip. More and more people are beginning to realize that it’s not OK to just put stuff in a dumpster.”
