PIERCE COLLEGE : Task Forces to Assist With Projects
Pierce College is creating task forces of faculty, staff and students to assist in the development of three projects to be funded by a $2.5-million federal grant.
New teaching strategies for improving student success, a campus computer network and a college-management information system will be developed with the money, according to Donald Love, Pierce vice president of administration.
The U.S. Department of Education awarded the funds under Title III of the Higher Education Act of 1965. Title III funds, intended to help colleges strengthen their instructional and administrative capacity, are distributed over five years.
Pierce College applied for a Title III grant in 1988 and 1989, but was unsuccessful until last summer.
In October, the college received an initial $470,785 for the first year of the grant. Each year, Pierce must submit a progress report and request for continued funding for evaluation by the Department of Education.
The college already has submitted a request for $499,982 for the second year. Title III Project Coordinator James Hardesty said that the project proposal is “still in the embryo stage, but things will start moving during this semester.”
The first project, called Activity One, includes the installation of a management-information system that will “strengthen the management and decision-making by college administrators,” Love said.
