Anti-Semitism and Politics
Pat Buchanan has been charged with anti-Semitism by Helmreich because he defends former Nazis and charged the Jewish lobby of pushing the U.S. into war. He could have added opposing the huge loans to Israel.
Yet as the Israeli writer Amotz AraEl writes (Commentary, Feb. 10), the peace process is supported by 80% of the Israelis, but fringe groups, light years away from the political mainstream, control Israeli government agencies, abuse public office, etc. So opposition to any policy or policies of the government in Israel is universally accepted as anti-Semitism. Does anyone doubt what Buchanan said?
P.S. The “Nazi” Buchanan defended was shipped to Israel by the Office of Special Investigations without due process guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution, i.e., no trial here to face a foreign court system. And the Soviets provided information clearing him from the crime charged before he was sent there.
