THOMAS SEDANO JR. is a journeyman clerk at Lucky Stores in Long Beach and a member of the United Food and Commercial Workers Union Local 324 for more than 40 years. Commenting on executive pay scales, he told The Times:

Workers--union and non-union--have been under siege for more than a decade with (employer) demands for wage freezes and concessions. Now that they face recession-caused layoffs and uncertain futures, outrage over annual earnings for executives is escalating.

It doesn’t bother me that executives in big public companies make a lot more money than other employees. High pay--within reason--for responsible positions is expected. It also makes sense in our free-enterprise system that some folks make out because of a unique ability--like athletes, entertainers or inventors.

What is beyond imagining is that an employee of a public company can make millions in a given year just to manage. In some cases, these managers get their millions even though the companies they manage are doing lousy. It’s not fair and not right that so many of these guys--and they are almost all guys--are paid these fantastic sums. Something is way out of whack here that has to be fixed, and fast.
