TENNIS : Rain Postpones All but 4 Matches at Indian Wells

Richard Krajicek of the Netherlands, with serves over 120 m.p.h., outlasted Australia’s Richard Fromberg, 5-7, 6-4, 6-3, Monday night in the first round of the $1.075-million Newsweek Champions Cup at Hyatt Grand Champions at Indian Wells.

But rain dominated the day. Because of the weather, only four matches were completed, the last of which was Krajicek’s victory ending at nearly 10:30 p.m.

Also advancing were 16th-seeded Jakob Hlasek of Switzerland, who beat Australia’s Todd Woodbridge, 7-5, 6-4; Francisco Clavet of Spain, who defeated Brian MacPhie, 6-4, 6-3, and Javier Sanchez of Spain, who swept Oliver Delaitre of Luxembourg, 6-3, 6-1.

First-round play is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. today, an hour earlier than usual, to try to get in as many matches as possible. More rain is expected Wednesday.

Ninth-seeded David Wheaton got a new first-round opponent when MaliVai Washington withdrew because of a sore elbow and was replaced in the draw by Wally Masur.
