Intel Unveils Faster 486 Chip: Intel Corp. announced a souped-up version of its most powerful line of microprocessors, the “brains” of computers. Computers based on the 486DX2 chip can operate up to 70% faster than those using the first-generation 486 chip, Intel said. It said computer makers can upgrade existing models by installing the new chip in place of the old. Other parts of the computer don’t have to be redesigned, as they often do when computer makers move to a more powerful microprocessor.
