Processing Center Opens for Federal Flood Aid Applicants

A center for processing federal flood aid applications opened Tuesday in Ventura, federal emergency officials said.

Flood victims can discuss low-interest loans with federal Small Business Administration workers or apply for other forms of federal and state assistance at the center at the Ventura County Fairgrounds.

Once an application is filed, an inspection of the applicant’s home or business will be conducted to assess damages, officials said.

People may be eligible for individual and family grants of up to $11,500, said Kurt Liepman, a Federal Emergency Management Agency spokesman.

Other types of aid include Small Business loans of up to $20,000 for the loss of personal belongings, up to $100,000 for homes, and up to $500,000 for businesses, he said.

Those who cannot safely reoccupy their homes could be eligible to receive housing for free for up to 18 months, he said.

Other FEMA centers were established in Malibu, Lancaster, North Hollywood, Westminster and Hesperia.

People also can call in applications to operators who are fluent in languages including Spanish and Vietnamese.

The general toll-free number is 1-800-462-9029, and the toll-free TDD hot line for the speech- or hearing-impaired is 1-800-462-7585.
