Fujitsu Says It Will Get Back in the Supercomputer Battle in United States

Fujitsu Ltd. announced Wednesday that it will re-enter the U.S. supercomputer market, which has grown more competitive since the Japanese company dropped out in 1985.

Fujitsu’s high-performance machines are the fourth most powerful in the world, according to Dataquest Inc., a market research company in San Jose.

But the U.S. market will be difficult to crack because of heavy competition from top U.S. supercomputer makers such as Cray Research Inc. and because of a wave of Japan-bashing, Dataquest said.

“Selling Japanese supercomputers into the U.S. market is a very difficult proposition politically,” said Christopher Willard, a supercomputer industry analyst for Dataquest.
