The death toll in a collision between two trains west of Moscow rose to 40 Wednesday, Russian TV reported.

The crash on Tuesday involved a Riga-Moscow express and a freight train near the town of Nelidovo.

The television report said the most likely cause of the collision was the failure of one of the drivers to observe signals.
