Hollywood : Low-Income Housing Grant

Share

Federal housing officials have awarded the local Salvation Army almost $7 million to build a low-income apartment complex in Hollywood for senior citizens.

The 99-unit complex will be known as the Hollywood Silvercrest Residence, said Lt. Col. David P. Riley, divisional commander of the Salvation Army’s Southern California Division. Riley said the complex will be built on land the Salvation Army owns in the 5900 block of Hollywood Boulevard.

Each unit will be about 540 square feet and consist of a bedroom, living room, kitchen and bathroom. The Salvation Army will also offer residents social, educational and recreational activities.

The grant, by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, will cover about 80% of the construction costs, and additional funds will be sought from other government sources, Salvation Army officials said.

The Silvercrest complex will be part of a larger Salvation Army project located at the same 1.7-acre site, which will include a 20-bed shelter for runaway and homeless teen-agers and a youth center that will provide tutoring and recreational programs for children, teen-agers and local families.
