BASEBALL / DAILY REPORT : AROUND THE MAJOR LEAGUES : La Russa Extended, Show Is Released
The Oakland Athletics extended the contract of Manager Tony La Russa through 1994 and released pitcher Eric Show, after club officials investigated why he missed a practice without calling in and then showed up with unexplained cuts on his hands.
Show missed practice Feb. 25, then appeared at a workout three days later with cuts on both hands.
General Manager Sandy Alderson was not satisfied with the right-hander’s explanations for the missed practice or the cuts. He said Show asked to be released. Show was to earn $700,000.
Former Dodger Eddie Murray, signed by New York as a free agent, had a run-scoring single left-handed in the first inning and a solo home run right-handed in the fourth, leading the first-string Mets to a seven-inning victory, 4-1, in an intrasquad game.
