COMPTON : Relatives of Slain Man, 86, Ask Help in Finding Killer

Share

Relatives of an 86-year-old man beaten to death a year ago outside a Compton-area lumber yard he helped found nearly 40 years ago gathered Friday at the business to plead for the public’s help in finding his killers.

Charles Beckman was beaten on March 9 of last year near Beckman Lumber Service at 19500 S. Alameda St. in the unincorporated Rancho Dominguez area just southeast of Compton. He died of his injuries later that day at Long Beach Memorial Medical Center, said his daughter-in-law, Kymberly Beckman.

The elderly man had apparently surprised burglars at the business about 10:30 a.m., and passersby found him on the sidewalk. “We’re hanging a wreath at the spot where he was attacked and a sign asking for public help, and we’re going to pass out flyers,” Beckman said. Anyone knowing more about the crime is urged to call Sgt. Dirk Edmundson at the sheriff’s homicide bureau.
