The Panthers are young but return eight of nine starters from the ’91 squad. Prelesnik hopes the double-play combination of Brubeck and Puccio can lead Orange to a top-three finish in the league. Puccio, a second-team all-league selection, hit .329 as a freshman last season. Brubeck, honorable mention all-league, hit .312 as a sophomore. “They are two blue chippers,” Prelesnik said. “No one in the league can play better defense than they can.” Brubeck and Puccio key the defense, which will be busy behind Stroud, Orange’s No. 1 pitcher. Stroud pitched two no-hitters last season but posted a 2.08 ERA and struck out only 88 batters in more than 150 innings. “We don’t have an overpowering pitcher,” Prelesnik said, “but I think we can surprise some people. This league will really be tough, and we just need some timely hitting and pitching with some good defense.” Pauly was the team’s top run producer, leading the team in RBIs while hitting for a team-high average of .394.
