A company might pay $10,000 or more to set up its own elder-care referral program. But there are some less costly options:

--Analyze how existing employee benefits, such as flex-time and job-sharing, can be tailored to individual elder-care problems.

--Sponsor educational seminars to inform employees of available community services.

--Survey employees to determine how many need to care for aging relatives.

--Make sure middle managers support the elder-care program envisoned by the firm’s president.
