A father and his 23-year-old son died this weekend after suffering severe burns when their wooden shack caught fire after a candle toppled from a table, the San Diego County coroner’s office said.

Roberto Ramirez, 49, was found dead in the makeshift shack 150 yards from the 2700 block of North Santa Fe Avenue at 10:20 p.m. Saturday, authorities said. His son, Enrique Ramirez, died at 7:07 a.m. Sunday at UC San Diego Medical Center, officials said.

The father and son had lived in the shack with other Latino laborers, officials said. Authorities believe a small candle left burning fell from a table, igniting some of the belongings in the shack.

Residents from other nearby shanties rushed to put out the fire with buckets of water after they heard screams, officials said.
