More than 2,000 people from throughout the world are expected to attend the seventh annual conference on technology for people with disabilities. The event, sponsored by Cal State Northridge, begins March 18 at the Los Angeles Airport Marriott Hotel.

The conference, the largest of its kind in the world, will feature more than 100 exhibits, CSUN spokeswoman Kaine Thompson said. It will continue through March 21.

For researchers, the conference is an international forum to demonstrate new technology and share information to help people in their own countries, she said.

Two CSUN researchers, Neil Scott and Marshall Raskind, will display their newly developed speech synthesis system, “Sound Proof,” which reads aloud computer text material.

Scott has also developed a system that will give disabled students access to any computer by linking two machines through infrared beams that relay information.

The disabled can also learn about new products, said Harry Murphy, conference director and director of CSUN’s disabled student services.

Scott said the new technology not only gives those with disabilities greater control over their lives, but also can change the public’s perception of them.
