School Choice Initiative
As volunteers who have devoted our careers and our lives to improving education for all children, we see the proposed school voucher initiative as the most serious threat to California’s public education system.
The column by Alibrandi and Teasleymakes no mention of the devastation the so-called school voucher initiative would bring to our already overcrowded and underfunded schools. This ill-conceived proposal would take $1.5 billion from the budget each year and divert it to private schools.
The idea of school “choice” is deliberately misleading. In this initiative there is nothing to guarantee that parents will actually get their choice. Private schools will continue to screen children as they always have. The initiative will drain critically needed dollars from public education--money that could be used to continue to make improvements in our public schools.
