A gang member who was part of a group that threw boiling soup on a child because the youngster’s mother had cooperated with the police was sentenced to nine years in prison Wednesday.

David Robert Lopez, 18, was with a gang that broke into an apartment manager’s unit in the MacArthur Park area last October. The woman was assaulted and then hot liquid was poured on her 18-month old son, causing second-degree burns.

The gang was angry at the woman for calling police over gang activities, according to Deputy Dist. Atty. Alfred Coletta. He said he was pleased by the sentence but added: “Unfortunately the little boy will be reminded by the burns he’ll carry with him for a long time.”
