ORANGE : Food Vendor Ban Change to Be Studied

Share

The City Council voted unanimously this week to consider changing a city ordinance to allow some outdoor food vending carts.

Outdoor food vendors are prohibited in Orange. The proposed code amendment would still bar pushcarts but would allow hot dog stands and other food carts at fixed outdoor locations, as long as the carts are 300 feet or more from any public street and 200 feet or more from any church school or park.

Chamber of Commerce executive director Brent Hunter told the council that just four or five locations would be feasible for the carts under the proposed amendment restrictions.

He recommended that the council allow just one vendor at each site to prevent crowding at the few potential sites.

Council members have previously opposed pushcarts and other outdoor food vending because of concerns about potential health hazards and a proliferation of such vendors.

Councilwoman Joanne Coontz suggested that permits be required for all vendors.

A public hearing will be held to allow vendors and residents to respond to the proposed amendment. Officials said they hope that the hearing will help determine where outdoor food vending should be allowed and outline conditions vendors must meet.
