UNIVERSAL CITY : Group to Honor Gen. Colin Powell
Gen. Colin L. Powell, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, is scheduled to receive a humanitarian award from a San Fernando Valley group March 22 at the Universal City Hilton Hotel.
The San Fernando Valley Chapter of The Links Inc., an organization of black professional women, will give Powell the Don Newcombe Humanitarian Award “for his contribution to the nation and as a role model to the community at large,” according to a spokeswoman for the organization.
Powell is expected to attend. Newcombe, a former professional baseball player, was the first recipient of the award.
The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors has also designated March 22 as “General Colin L. Powell Day” in the county. Supervisor Kenneth Hahn, who asked that Powell be honored with his own day, said he also wanted to commend him “for his many years of outstanding and dedicated service.”
Powell’s military career began in 1958, when he was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army through the Reserve Officer Training Corps.
