COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Veltman Wins Sprint, Hurdles, Long Jump for Irvine

Marieke Veltman won the 100 meters (11.8 seconds), 100-meter hurdles (14.2) and the long jump (20 feet 5 3/4) to lead host UC Irvine to a victory in a four-way nonconference women’s track and field meet Saturday.

The Anteaters won 14 of the 17 scored events and finished with 236 points. Cornell was second at 125 1/2, Cal State Fullerton third with 81 and Navy fourth with 62 1/2.

Heather Killeen of Fullerton won the 3,000 meters in 9:50.1, and teammate Kristen Peters the 5,000 in 17:04.5.

In nonconference men’s track and field:

UC Irvine 251 1/2, Cornell 131 1/2, Navy 116, Cal State Fullerton 88--The host Anteaters won 11 individual events and both relays. Triple jumper Jessie Henderson (48-3 1/4) was the Titans’ winner.

In a Western Intercollegiate Volleyball Assn. match:

Brigham Young 3, UC Irvine 1--Leland Quinn had 26 kills for the host Anteaters (4-13, 2-10). Shawn Patchell led Brigham Young (8-7, 4-6) with 13.

In Rebel Spring Games softball tournament:

Chapman 7, Slippery Rock (Pa.) 0--Deann Ford (7-0) pitched perfect game for the Panthers. Ford struck out 13, and Dawn Poulsen went two for three with two runs batted in.

Chapman 3, Shippensburg (Pa.) 2 (9 innings)--Jennifer Wagner went two for four and drove in the winning run in the ninth for the Panthers.

In Golden State Athletic Conference softball:

Southern California College 8-16, Pt. Loma Nazarene 3-5--Rene Hernandez was two for four and scored twice and Carrie Nelson drove in two runs with a seventh-inning single in the opener at Pt. Loma Nazarene.

Stacey Mounce and Cherlyn Gordon each drove in four runs in the second game, which was shortened to six inning because of the mercy rule. Mounce was five for five and Gordon three for four for the Vanguards (9-2, 7-4).

In the Southern California Intercollegiate Tennis Championships:

Tontz Loses--Chris Tontz of UC Irvine lost to Ari Nathan of Pepperdine, 6-4, 6-1, in a quarterfinal match at the Valley Hunt Club in Pasadena. Nathan will face USC sophomore Jon Leach in a semifinal at 10 a.m. today. Leach, a former Laguna Beach High standout, advanced with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Ashley Naumann of Pepperdine.
