Southwestern Bell to Trim Up to 1,000 Jobs: Southwestern Bell Telephone Co. said it wants to eliminate the jobs by the end of the year through early retirement offers to union employees. The St. Louis-based company said it reached an agreement on the offer earlier this week with the Communications Workers of America. About 2,000 surplus jobs have been identified throughout the company’s territory. Southwestern Bell employs a total of 52,300 workers. The surpluses are due to consolidation of some jobs, new technology and the early retirement of about 3,500 managers last year, said Gary Lucas, assistant vice president for labor relations and human resources.
